Aaron Rodgers, Jets rue penalties, missed chances in loss to Bills

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- For the third straight week, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was left to explain a loss in which his team missed an opportunity to win the game on its final possession. This time, he seemed more frustrated -- and concerned -- than ever. "We need to get going," Rodgers said Monday night after the Jets -- in their first game under interim coach Jeff Ulbrich -- dropped to 2-4 with a 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium. "This was a golden opportunity. Some games you win in the NFL, and some games you give away. This was a giveaway." Not only was he critical of the Jets' performance, but Rodgers questioned the officiating, too. The teams combined for 22 penalties and 204 yards, including 11 for 110 yards by the Jets, who suffered the same issues under former coach Robert Saleh. "It seemed a little ridiculous," Rodgers said of the officiating. "Some of [the calls] seemed really bad, including the roughing...

Carlos Rodón controls emotions, Guardians as Yankees win Game 1

NEW YORK -- On Thursday, while Gerrit Cole mowed down the Kansas City Royals in the  New York Yankees' series-clinching Game 4 win in the American League Division Series, Carlos Rodón took mental notes from the dugout. Not on anything Cole did to Royals hitters. Not on his approach or his pitch selection or his mechanics. But on Cole's demeanor around the mound. His tranquility as he navigated the only jam he encountered. The lack of screams and fist pumps. So cool, so calm. "It's just like a robot walking to the dugout," Rodón noted. Rodón's emotions sabotaged his first start of this postseason, in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Royals. He saw in Cole the model to emulate. On Monday, in the most important start of his professional career, Rodón nailed the imitation, tossing six brilliant innings in the Yankees' 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series. Rodón held the Guardians to one run on...

Rodón's gem, HRs by Soto, Stanton spark Yankees to Game 1 win

NEW YORK --  Juan Soto homered during New York's three-run third inning, Carlos Rodón got his first postseason win and the Yankees took advantage of Cleveland's wildness in a 5-2 victory on Monday night in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. Cleveland became the second team to throw a pair of run-scoring wild pitches in a postseason inning and tied a postseason record with five overall. Guardians pitchers walked six in a nine-batter span and nine overall. Giancarlo Stanton added his 13th career postseason homer for the Yankees, who are seeking a record 41st AL pennant. New York batters have walked 36 times in five postseason games. "Getting the start-off win is big," Stanton said. "It's a message in its own." Rodón rebounded from the Yankees' only loss in the division series, limiting the Guardians to a pair of singles before Brayan Rocchio's sixth-inning homer. "The goal was to just stay in control, stay in control of what...

Clippers' Kawhi Leonard (knee) uncertain for season opener

INGLEWOOD, Calif. --  Kawhi Leonard has been ruled out for the remainder of the preseason, and his status for the  LA Clippers' season opener Oct. 23 remains uncertain. Clippers coach Ty Lue confirmed Monday that Leonard will not play in the team's preseason finale against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday. Leonard has not suited up this preseason, missing the first three games and Monday night's 110-96 win against the Dallas Mavericks at Intuit Dome because of inflammation in his right knee. "Continue to keep rehabbing," Lue said when asked about the plan for Leonard this week. "Keep getting better. Keep checking the boxes." Leonard has not participated in contact drills in training camp, as the team has been cautious with its franchise star. Lue has said that Leonard has spent practices strengthening his knee. Leonard missed the final eight games of last regular season and was limited to two games in the six-game, first-round loss to...

76ers star Paul George suffers hyperextended left knee

Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George suffered a hyperextended left knee in the second quarter of Monday's preseason win in Atlanta and didn't return. "Hopefully it'll be OK, so he's back with us right away," 76ers coach Nick Nurse told reporters after the game. George, playing in his second preseason game with the 76ers after signing a four-year max contract as a free agent this offseason, was defending Hawks forward Jalen Johnson on a drive with a little over eight minutes to go in the second quarter when his left leg planted awkwardly and bent at an odd angle. He quickly exited the game and didn't return, with the team ruling George out for the remainder of the evening in the second half. "I felt that it hyperextended, and immediately it was, all right, I need to get taken out and (looked at), but if you ask me, I'm not too concerned about it," George told The Philadelphia Inquirer. Philadelphia had already ruled out  Joel Embiid for the rest of the...

Mark Vientos slam lifts Mets to Game 2 win, ties NLCS vs. Dodgers

LOS ANGELES -- The intentional walk, if you think about it, was appropriate. Two runners were on in a two-run game. First base was open with two outs. Francisco Lindor, a potential MVP who had already homered, was up to bat. And yet Mark Vientos, who would deliver the grand slam that set the tone in the  New York Mets' 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series on Monday, said he "took it personal." That reaction, if you ask Vientos' teammates, was also appropriate. "My man's got a lot of confidence in himself," said  Sean Manaea, the Mets' winning pitcher. "I love that." Vientos' grand slam off Landon Knack, who was expected to do most of the work in what qualified as a bullpen game for the Dodgers, capped a five-run second inning that helped the Mets split the first two games from Dodger Stadium, evening the best-of-seven NLCS with three games from New York's Citi Field on...

Pulisic, Pepi absence opens door for other USMNT players - Pochettino

United States men's coach Mauricio Pochettino said the door is open for new players to feature against Mexico on Tuesday night at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara after the departure of five players. Marlon Fossey, Zack Steffen, Weston McKennie, Ricardo Pepi left U.S. camp after a 2-0 victory over Panama on Saturday due to injuries, while Christian Pulisic returned to AC Milan to avoid work overload. Now, Pochettino will use the upcoming friendly as the last chance to observe other players before the next international window in November. "It's really important for the players because I think we all want to have the opportunity to play, to show quality," said Pochettino on Monday ahead of the Mexico game. "It's true, it's a problem because I think we cannot have five players that can be involved in all of our quality. Some players that cannot be involved in the last game, against Panama and now in Mexico. "It's a little bit sad...

Colorado State star WR Tory Horton out for season

Colorado State wide receiver Tory Horton, a two-time first-team All-Mountain West selection, will miss the rest of the season and end his decorated college career with an injury that will require surgery. Rams coach Jay Norvell did not specify the injury in a statement Monday night, although Horton left Saturday's game against San Jose State with an apparent knee injury late in the first half. He returned in the second half but was limited and finished the game with seven receptions for 75 yards. Horton, a two-time team captain who earned first-team All-Mountain West honors in 2022 and 2023, finishes his career just 35 yards shy of Colorado State's career receiving yards record. He spent two seasons with Nevada, where Norvell coached before CSU, before transferring and joining his coach. "His injury is season-ending, but he will fully recover and have his chance at the next level with the National Football League," Norvell said in a statement. "I am appreciative of Tory's...

Gaudreau's father takes ice with Blue Jackets: 'Joy to have him'

The Columbus Blue Jackets now have what they call a "Johnny skate" at the end of practice. It's a shot someone takes from the far end of the ice toward the opposite goal. Make it, players skate one lap. Miss it, players skate three laps. That's as in 1 and 3. 13. Johnny Gaudreau's jersey number. And the shooter Monday missed it on purpose. Nobody minded, since it was Johnny Gaudreau's father. Guy Gaudreau -- the father of the late brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau -- was a guest at the Blue Jackets' practice in Columbus, a day before the team's home opener against the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. He skated around with a few players, tapped his stick on the ice to encourage players as they skated past and had a fist-bump for everybody before the session ended "He loves the game, loves hockey," Blue Jackets coach Dean Evason said. "It was a joy to have him out there."   Guy Gaudreau is former hockey coach at Hollydell Ice Arena and Gloucester...

Oklahoma State coach Gundy injures eye after run-in on ranch

On the heels of three straight losses, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy took another hit during the Cowboys' bye week, suffering an unusual eye injury that forced him to move his weekly, in-person news conference to Zoom on Monday morning. "Well, I had a little run-in with my cattle over the weekend," Gundy told reporters. "I guess they've been watching us play and I got headbutted. So I've got a bad eye that I didn't think would be particularly enjoyable for people when they were looking at my pretty face in a live interview. "More importantly, it's full of blood, and I get dizzy. So it's not easy to be upright and be in a normal function. But other than that, I'm doing great." Gundy, in his 20th season in charge of Oklahoma State, is expected to coach the Cowboys when they visit No. 13 BYU on Friday. However, further details on the injury and how they might impact Gundy in his duties for the 9:15 p.m. ET kickoff in Provo, Utah, are not yet clear. "It should get better...

Mets win Game 2 behind Manaea, Vientos to even NLCS with Dodgers

LOS ANGELES -- The New York Mets weren't sure what they were going to get with the Los Angeles Dodgers sending out a parade of relievers in a bullpen game. They found out right away. Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos homered as the Mets stopped the Dodgers' record-tying postseason scoreless streak in a 7-3 victory on Monday, tying the NL Championship Series at a game apiece. Lindor added to his storybook season with a leadoff homer in the first inning against Ryan Brasier. Vientos delivered during New York's five-run second, connecting for a grand slam against Landon Knack. Before Lindor went deep, Los Angeles had a string of 33 consecutive scoreless innings. Jack Flaherty led the Dodgers to a 9-0 victory in Game 1 of the NLCS on Sunday night. "I didn't know it," Lindor said of the Dodgers' streak. "I was just trying to have a quality at-bat and get the guys going." Sean Manaea opened Game 2 with four shutout innings for...

McCarthy: Cowboys 'relish' chance to bounce back from blowout

FRISCO, Texas -- A day after the most decisive home loss since 1988, Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy attempted to take a big picture view. The Cowboys suffered the fourth largest home loss in franchise history in Sunday's 47-9 defeat against the Detroit Lions to fall to 3-3 overall. The decisiveness of the loss and how poorly the Cowboys played could be enough to affect the mental state of the team, but McCarthy still believes in the roster. "At the end of the day if we totally don't believe it's about us, it'll always be about us and play to who we are, what we do, how we do it, then we're not going to get to where we want to go," McCarthy said. "And I believe we will. I think this is an opportunity that we relish. I know I relish it. And I think they do too. "So this is a place that a lot of good can come out of it. Been here before. And I think this is a really good opportunity for our leadership. I think it's an excellent opportunity for our young guys to...

Bills RB James Cook out Monday night against Jets with toe injury

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is inactive for Monday night's game against the New York Jets with a toe injury suffered in last week's loss to the Houston Texans. Cook was a limited participant in Saturday's practice after not participating earlier in the week, and was listed with a questionable designation going into the game. "It's getting better. Just improving every day," Cook said after Saturday's practice. "Trying to get it back stronger, and go out there and help the team, like I said, I'm just taking it day by day, treatment, see what, how I feel on Monday." Without Cook available, the team has elevated rookie running back Frank Gore Jr. from the practice squad. This will be his first career game action. Running backs Ty Johnson and rookie Ray Davis are expected to take on a significant load in Cook's absence. The Bills are looking avoid a three-game losing streak for the first time...

Notre Dame flips dual-threat 4-star QB Blake Hebert from Clemson

Notre Dame landed a commitment from four-star quarterback Blake Hebert on Monday, flipping the longtime Clemson pledge and securing a quarterback for the Irish's 2025 class less than two weeks after Deuce Knight's seismic flip to Auburn. Hebert, ESPN's No. 6 dual-threat passer in 2025, announced his decommitment from Clemson via X before giving his pledge to Notre Dame minutes later Monday evening. Hebert, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound quarterback from Greenwich, Connecticut, had been committed to Dabo Swinney and the Tigers since June 16, 2023. With his recruitment closed, Hebert took a pair of trips to Clemson earlier this year, most recently on an official visit in May. Yet the quarterback landscape in the 2025 cycle shifted when Knight, ESPN's No. 2 dual-threat quarterback, pulled his pledge from Notre Dame on Oct. 2 and committed to Auburn, ending a lengthy recruiting saga that began in the summer. The Irish were aggressive in their pursuit to...

Chargers' Jim Harbaugh 'confident' heart condition under control

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- After leaving Sunday's game against the Broncos with an irregular heartbeat, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that he will wear a heart monitor for the next two weeks and take a blood thinner and another medication to keep his heart from spiking. Harbaugh on Monday saw a cardiologist whom he said did not recommend a medical procedure but said he could have one in the future. In 1999 and 2012 Harbaugh had an ablation, which is a procedure that uses heat or cold to destroy heart tissue that is causing an irregular heartbeat. Harbaugh said he is not considering stepping away from football. "It would take my heart stopping for me not to be out there on the sideline," Harbaugh said. He said he will continue to follow doctors' directives and that he learned more about managing his heart.   "I'm pretty confident on this one that I know what it is and how to deal with it," Harbaugh said. "But as always, we'll address the doctors and...

Lions' Campbell won't count out Hutchinson returning this season

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- If there's one thing that Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell says he has learned about Aidan Hutchinson, it's not to bet against him. Campbell anticipates a four- to six-month recovery process for the Lions' star edge rusher after he underwent surgery to repair his fractured tibia and fibula, but the coach refuses to call it a season-ending injury. "I would never count Hutch out. Ever," Campbell said. "So, probably a long road, but I would never count him out and I would say if anybody can make it back, it'd be him." Campbell said Hutchinson's surgery went great Sunday night at Baylor White Medical Center in Irving, Texas. During Sunday's 47-9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium, Hutchinson injured his left leg on a play in which he was sacking Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. While pulling down Prescott, Hutchinson's leg appeared to snap above the ankle when it hit the left leg of teammate Alim McNeill. He...

Sirianni 'disappointed' he jawed with Eagles boo-birds after Sunday's win

PHILADELPHIA -- Eagles coach Nick Sirianni apologized for his interaction with a group of fans at the end of Sunday's home game against the Cleveland Browns. "I was trying to bring energy and enthusiasm yesterday, and I'm sorry and disappointed at how my energy was directed at the end of the game," he said during his videoconference with reporters Monday. "My energy should be all-in on coaching, motivating and celebrating with our guys. And I've got to have better wisdom and discernment of when to use that energy and that wasn't the time." As the Eagles secured a 20-16 win over Cleveland, Sirianni was seen on camera yelling and gesturing toward fans in the section behind the team's sideline. At one point he put his finger up to his ear, seeming to suggest he had silenced their chirping with a victory. Boos rained down for parts of the game as the offense sputtered at times and the talent-rich Eagles struggled to separate from the now 1-5 Browns. Though not...

Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw to 'give it a go' for 2025 season

LOS ANGELES -- Injured Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw plans to return for another season in 2025, he said Monday. "I had some tough luck with my toe this year, but I want to make use of this surgery," Kershaw told Fox before Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the New York Mets. "I don't want to have surgery and then shut it down. So I'm going to come back next year and give it a go. See how it goes. "My shoulder and elbow, everything, my arm feels great." The three-time National League Cy Young Award winner and former NL MVP will not appear for the Dodgers this postseason because of troublesome bone spurs in his left big toe. Kershaw, a 10-time All-Star, appeared in only seven games during the regular season, going 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA after undergoing shoulder surgery after the 2023 season. The surgery delayed Kershaw's 2024 debut until July 25 and played a key role in his decision to return for an 18th...

Commanders lose DT Jonathan Allen (pectoral) for season

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen will sit out the rest of the season after tearing his left pectoral muscle Sunday, coach Dan Quinn announced Monday. Allen sustained the tear during the third quarter of a 30-23 loss to Baltimore, rolling over in pain after running back Derrick Henry scored on a 7-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 12 seconds left. Allen had tests on the sideline and after the game, and later expressed optimism in the locker room about his health outlook. But an MRI on Monday afternoon revealed the tear. Quinn said Allen would undergo surgery "in the coming days." Washington also had two other defensive linemen exit the game because of injuries -- defensive ends Dorance Armstrong (rib) and Javontae Jean-Baptiste (right foot). Quinn said both are undergoing more tests. He said initial X-rays on Jean-Baptiste were negative. Allen has been one of Washington's top defensive linemen since the team drafted him in the...

Sources: De'Aaron Fox bypasses extension, eyes '25 for larger deal

Sacramento Kings star De'Aaron Fox is bypassing a three-year, $165 million maximum extension this year as he and his representative, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, position the All-Star point guard for a larger deal in the 2025 offseason, sources told ESPN on Monday. Fox, slated to be a free agent in 2026, has been eligible to sign the three-year deal before the start of the regular season. By waiting for next summer, Fox would open up the possibility of a four-year, $229 million maximum extension with the Kings -- or a five-year, $345 million supermax deal should he be named to an All-NBA team.   Fox has made clear publicly and privately that he wants to be a significant part of the future in Sacramento. Kings owner Vivek Ranadive and franchise officials have worked closely with Fox and other key players on major decisions this offseason, including the acquisition of All-Star DeMar DeRozan. Fox, 26, averaged a career-high 26.6 points last season and ranked...

Kevin Stefanski: Deshaun Watson still Browns' best chance to win

One day after the Cleveland Browns' offense continued to crater in a 20-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, coach Kevin Stefanski again placed his support behind Deshaun Watson as the team's starting quarterback. "I think Deshaun gives us the best chance to win, continues to give us the best chance to win," Stefanski said Monday when asked why he wouldn't insert backup Jameis Winston as the starter. "We need to play really good offensive football at his position, and really at every position to be successful." In Sunday's defeat, Cleveland's fourth straight, the Browns became the first team since the 2014 Jacksonville Jaguars to fail to reach 20 points in each of its first six games. Cleveland is also the only team that has not recorded 300 total yards in a game this season. Watson has posted a 21.5 QBR, the lowest among qualified passers, but Stefanski said after the game that he is sticking with Watson at starting quarterback. On Monday,...

Source: Commanders lose DT Jonathan Allen (pectoral) for season

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his left pectoral muscle Sunday, a source confirmed. Allen suffered the tear during the third quarter of a 30-23 loss to Baltimore, rolling over in pain after running back Derrick Henry scored on a 7-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 12 seconds remaining. Allen had tests on the sideline and after the game and later expressed optimism in the locker room about his health outlook. But an MRI Monday afternoon revealed the tear. Washington also had two other defensive linemen exit the game with injuries -- defensive ends Dorance Armstrong (rib) and Javontae Jean-Baptiste (right foot). Their status remains uncertain. Allen has been one of Washington's top defensive linemen since the team drafted him in the first round in 2017. He made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and '22 when he had a combined 16.5 sacks. Notre Dame loses CB Benjamin Morrison (hip) for season

Notre Dame's trend of significant injuries has continued as cornerback Benjamin Morrison, a projected first-round NFL draft pick, will miss the rest of the season with a hip injury. Coach Marcus Freeman said Morrison, a junior who has started throughout his career, will need hip surgery after sustaining the injury in Saturday's 49-7 win against Stanford. Morrison had 20 tackles and four pass breakups in six starts this season. The 6-foot, 190-pound Morrison led Notre Dame and finished seventh nationally with six interceptions as a true freshman in 2022. His interceptions total marked the most for a Notre Dame defender since Heisman Trophy finalist Manti Te'o in 2012. Morrison, son of former NFL safety Darryl Morrison, led Notre Dame with 10 pass breakups and finished second with three interceptions in 2023, when he was a semifinalist for the Thorpe Award. "Obviously, it's a blow to our team," Freeman said. "You lose a captain, great football player, and you feel terrible...

Florida QB Graham Mertz has torn ACL, ending his college career

Florida quarterback Graham Mertz will have surgery and sit out the rest of the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee during Saturday's overtime loss to Tennessee, coach Billy Napier announced Monday. "It's only right that I say how much I appreciate what he's brought to the team," Napier said. It was an excruciating way for Mertz, a sixth-year senior, to end his college career. It was a noncontact injury that occurred after he threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Arlis Boardingham midway through the third quarter to put Florida ahead 10-0. As Mertz was backing up after making the throw, his leg appeared to land awkwardly on the turf. He was tended to by trainers, limped off the field and slammed his helmet to the ground when he reached the sideline. Mertz watched the fourth quarter on crutches and wearing a brace on his knee. With Mertz sidelined, Florida will turn to true freshman DJ Lagway full time at quarterback. Mertz ...

Sources: Bulls' Lonzo Ball expected to make return vs. Timberwolves

After missing two straight NBA seasons, Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball is expected to make his return to basketball in Wednesday night's preseason home game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, sources told ESPN. Ball, 26, last played in a game for Chicago on Jan. 14, 2022. Multiple procedures on his left knee since then include a rare double cartilage transplant. A team official confirmed that the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NBA draft is on track to debut on Wednesday. This signifies a major comeback to basketball for Ball, who underwent the cartilage transplant surgery in May 2023. Ball said last week on his "What An Experience" podcast that he hoped to play near the end of preseason. The Bulls had a 27-13 record up until the last date Ball played a game, the best record in the Eastern Conference at the time. He had the best shooting season of his career in 2021-22, averaging career-highs in field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage. Acquired...

Yankees add Anthony Rizzo, Marcus Stroman to roster for ALCS

NEW YORK -- Four wins shy of their first World Series appearance since 2009, the New York Yankees included veterans Anthony Rizzo and Marcus Stroman on their roster for the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Guardians. Rizzo hasn't played since fracturing his right hand's fourth and fifth fingers when he was hit by a pitch on Sept. 28, the penultimate day of the regular season. He later said the typical recovery timetable is three to four weeks, but after ramping up baseball activities over the weekend, Rizzo will be active for Monday's Game 1 -- just 16 days after suffering the injury. Rizzo on Sunday faced live pitching during the team's workout at Yankee Stadium. Whether he starts Game 1 is unclear; the Yankees could decide to give him more time to recover before using him later in the series. The team used a combination of Jon Berti and Oswaldo Cabrera at first base in the AL Division Series against the Kansas City...

Doug Pederson on 'culture change' comment: Jaguars just need wins

The Jacksonville Jaguars can't get discouraged over their 1-5 start and just need to start winning games. That's what head coach Doug Pederson said he meant Sunday when he said the team needs a change of culture: Don't become used to losing, because that can become the Jaguars' identity in 2024. "Obviously we've lost some games here, so we want to change that culture to a winning culture," Pederson said Monday morning via Zoom from London. "That's why we coach and that's why we play. ... These guys bust their tails during the week and I don't want them to feel, even though we haven't won [many games] yet, I don't want them to feel sort of mentally defeated, if that makes sense, because that's where the slippery slope comes in. "If you feel like you're going into a game where you don't have a chance, then you're not going to have a chance. You're not going to give yourself an opportunity to win that game." Pederson talked about needing a culture change on the team's...

Dolphins' Mike McDaniel expects Tua Tagovailoa to play in 2024

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said he expects quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to play again this season, although he didn't have an exact date for his return. Tagovailoa has spent the past four weeks on injured reserve with a concussion he suffered on Sept. 12 and isn't eligible to return until the Dolphins' game against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 8. McDaniel did not commit to Tagovailoa returning when he's eligible next week, but for the first time since his injury, he did offer some optimism into the quarterback playing again this season. "I do expect to see him playing football in 2024," McDaniel said Monday. "But where that is, exactly -- we'll let the process continue, since we still have time before he can even entertain anything. We'll make sure that he's diligent this week and assess after that." Tagovailoa has a history of concussions since entering the league in 2020. He was diagnosed with two concussions during the 2022...

Lions' Aidan Hutchinson has surgery to repair tibia, fibula

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Detroit Lions star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson underwent successful surgery Sunday night at a Dallas-area hospital to repair his fractured tibia and fibula, the team announced Monday. Hutchinson will return to Detroit this week and is expected to make a full recovery. There is no timetable for his return to play, the team said. A source, however, told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Hutchinson's season is over, as his injury typically carries a recovery timeline of six to eight months. A rod was placed in Hutchinson's leg during the surgery, the source said. Hutchinson injured his left leg on a play in which he was sacking Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during Sunday's 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. Hutchinson's leg appeared to snap above the ankle when it collided with the left leg of teammate Alim McNeill as Hutchinson was pulling Prescott down. Members of the Lions and Cowboys quickly circled...

Donte DiVincenzo, Rick Brunson separated after heated exchange

Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo, playing at Madison Square Garden for the first time since being traded from New York two weeks ago, had to be separated from  Knicks assistant coach Rick Brunson during a heated exchange after Sunday night's preseason game. Players and coaches were shaking hands and embracing after the Knicks' 115-110 victory, but DiVincenzo and Brunson -- the father of New York star Jalen Brunson -- had a brief verbal dustup on the MSG floor. "I was talking to Thibs," DiVincenzo was heard saying on camera to Rick Brunson at one point. The postgame exchange occurred after DiVincenzo had already been shown on camera at the free throw line shouting toward the Knicks bench earlier in the game. "That's what happens when they let you run the show," DiVincenzo said twice before shooting a free throw during the first quarter. DiVincenzo declined to specify who he was jawing with on the New York bench and suggested that he initially...

Haason Reddick's new agents eye end to Jets dispute

Dropped by his longtime agency last week, New York Jets holdout pass rusher  Haason Reddick has hired Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha as his new agents. Rosenhaus, who already has talked with the Jets, told ESPN's Adam Schefter that he expressed hope that the dispute can be resolved soon. "We look forward to working with the Jets to get this resolved as soon as possible," Rosenhaus told Schefter. "Haason would like to be a New York Jet for years to come, and our goal is to make that happen." If Reddick truly wants to remain with the Jets, it would represent in about face because he requested a trade on August 12. The Jets have said they won't trade him. Rosenhaus said he's planning to attend Monday night's game against the Buffalo Bills, where he presumably will meet with Jets officials. Reddick, 30, acquired in a March 29 trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, is the NFL's last remaining holdout. The saga took a strange turn last week when CAA...

Dodgers tie playoff scoreless innings mark in Game 1 rout of Mets

LOS ANGELES -- Perfection was in the air for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. Perfection on the scoreboard, perfection for a hometown player living out a dream and near-perfection for just about everyone throwing a baseball right now for L.A. In a Game 1 rout replete with history-making zeroes, Jack Flaherty and two relievers combined to shut out the New York Mets  9-0 as the Dodgers seized a series-opening win in the NLCS. "It was just a pitching clinic," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "I thought [Flaherty] did a great job of filling up the strike zone with his complete mix. Used his fastball when he needed to. Just minimized damage." With the whitewash, the Dodgers have extended a scoreless innings streak -- one that began in Game 3 of the NLDS against the San Diego Padres -- to 33 innings, matching the 1966 Baltimore Orioles for the longest in postseason history. The Dodgers also became just the third team to record three...

Donte DiVincenzo, Rick Brunson exchange words after Wolves-Knicks

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo, playing at Madison Square Garden for the first time since being traded from New York two weeks ago, had to be separated from  Knicks assistant coach Rick Brunson following the Knicks' 115-110 preseason victory Sunday night.  Players and coaches were shaking hands and embracing as the score went final, but DiVincenzo and Brunson -- the father of Knicks star Jalen Brunson -- had words for each other during a brief verbal dustup on the Garden floor. "I was talking to Thibs," DiVincenzo was heard saying on camera to Rick Brunson at one point. The postgame exchange occurred after DiVincenzo had already been shown on camera at the free throw line shouting toward the Knicks sideline earlier in the game. "That's what happens when they let you run the show," DiVincenzo said twice before firing up a free throw during the first quarter. After the game, the swingman declined to specify exactly who he was jawing...

After worst home loss of Jones era, owner backs coach McCarthy

ARLINGTON, Texas -- After suffering the worst home loss of his time as Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager, 47-9 to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Jerry Jones backed his head coach, Mike McCarthy. "Oh, I haven't even considered that," Jones said of a potential change. "I'm not considering that. Just so you're clear, I'm not considering that." When reminded about the previous in-season coaching change he made in 2010 when he fired Wade Phillips and named Jason Garrett as interim coach after a 1-7 start, Jones became terse. "That would be a hypothetical. In that matter, do you think I'm an idiot? Do you? OK. Well, I'm not going to hypothetical with you about would I consider a coaching change in light of the timing we're sitting here with. I'm not. At all," he said. McCarthy is in the final year of his contract. Despite his posting three straight 12-5 finishes, the Cowboys' lack of playoff success -- they haven't advanced beyond the divisional round of...

'Tampa Strong': Bucs 'win one for the city' after Hurricane Milton

NEW ORLEANS -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers overcame three second-quarter interceptions to defeat the New Orleans Saints 51-27 on Sunday, capping off a difficult week for the state of Florida, which was hit with its second major hurricane in two weeks -- first with Hurricane Helene and then Hurricane Milton, which made landfall Thursday night as a Category 3 storm. "I think today was just a team embodying and embracing everything that everybody's going through," said quarterback Baker Mayfield, who threw for 325 yards and four touchdowns. "Ups and downs, trying to handle it the best way you can, fight through it and find a way to make it work. That's life. Obviously a natural disaster's not easy to deal with -- you find a way to make it work, you overcome and you come together. That's what this group did today." As of Sunday, 14 deaths were linked to the storm that made landfall in Siesta Key. Tampa Bay got powerful winds from the northern eye wall and...

Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson carted off with broken tibia

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Detroit Lions star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson broke a tibia during Sunday's 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys in a scary scene at AT&T Stadium. Hutchinson injured his left leg on a play in which he was sacking Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Hutchinson's leg appeared to snap above the ankle when it collided with the left leg of teammate Alim McNeill as Hutchinson was pulling Prescott down. Members of the Lions and Cowboys quickly circled around Hutchinson as team doctors rushed to his side. Hutchinson's leg was placed in an air cast, and he exited on a cart. The Lions said after the game that Hutchinson underwent immediate surgery at a Dallas-area hospital.  "Hate it for Hutch. That's tough. It was tough," Campbell said. "He's in good hands right now. He's being taken care of. He'll stay back here and obviously he's going to be down for a little while. So, that's tough and it's hard when you lose somebody like...

Chargers' Jim Harbaugh exits vs. Broncos with atrial flutter

DENVER -- After briefly leaving in the first quarter of Sunday's win against the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters that he has atrial flutter, a type of arrhythmia that causes the heart to beat at an abnormally high rate, and that a flare-up made him seek medical attention. Harbaugh went to the locker room, where paramedics treated him. He had an electrocardiogram scan, and eventually, they got his heart back to a normal rhythm. Harbaugh returned later in the first quarter and coached the remainder of the game. He said he has had a flare-up in a game before. He said that in 2012, when he was coaching the San Francisco 49ers in a game against the Chicago Bears on "Monday Night Football," he felt an irregular heartbeat but finished coaching the game and saw doctors afterward. Doctors weren't able to get Harbaugh's heart back to a regular rhythm, so he had an ablation, which is a procedure that uses heat or cold to...

Eagles coach Sirianni unhappy with booing in win over Browns

PHILADELPHIA --  Eagles coach Nick Sirianni was seen on camera yelling and gesturing toward a group of fans at the end of Sunday's 20-16 home win over the Cleveland Browns as boos rained down for parts of a game in which the offense sputtered at times and the talent-rich Eagles struggled to separate from the now 1-5 Browns. Sirianni, wearing a wry smile and offering a wink, said he was "just excited to get the win" in explaining his interaction with the fans and praised the crowd for being loud and inducing a couple of Cleveland false-start penalties. But when asked about the jeering the Eagles received in their home stadium, Sirianni acknowledged they could do without the negativity. "We thrive off the crowd when they cheer for us. That's all I'll say," Sirianni said. "We hear them when they boo. We don't necessarily like it. I don't think that's productive for anybody. But when they cheer for us and when we've got them rolling, we love it." Sirianni has been a...

Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley demands targets early

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley didn't hold back when asked about his lack of production in the team's 20-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, in which he was targeted eight times but didn't come up with any catches. "I need some in the beginning of the f---ing game too," Ridley said. "This s--- is getting crazy. I sucked today and got to do better. But I got to get the ball a little earlier so I can be in the game and here with the team and play well also." Titans coach Brian Callahan said multiple times leading up to the game that he wanted to make sure he got the ball to Ridley, but the former Jaguar was only targeted twice in the first half. "I'm sure he'll be the first one to tell you it was disappointing," Callahan said. "He's one of our best players and we look to him to try and make a play or two and we didn't get it done at the end of the game." The last time Ridley didn't register a catch came in Week 4 with the...

Stewart, Laney-Hamilton deliver as Liberty level series with Lynx

NEW YORK --  Breanna Stewart said as disappointing as the New York Liberty's Game 1 loss in the WNBA Finals was on Thursday, she didn't lose sleep over it. She reviewed video of her free throw that rimmed out at the end of regulation and the layup she missed at the end of overtime. In neither case did she think she had done anything fundamentally wrong; the shots just didn't fall. That allowed her to get rest without dwelling on it too much. Still, when you're a two-time league MVP, you can't wait to redeem yourself. "The moment the game ended Thursday, I was looking forward to Sunday," Stewart said. In the Liberty's 80-66 Game 2 win over Minnesota, Stewart's fingerprints covered the box score. She led New York with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and a WNBA Finals-record 7 steals. She joined Alyssa Thomas in 2019 as the only players to record 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals in a Finals game, according to ESPN Research. Stewart also...

Chargers' Jim Harbaugh briefly exits vs. Broncos with illness

DENVER -- Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh left in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos with an illness, according to the team. The team said Harbaugh was questionable to return to the game, and he was back on the sideline a short time later. The Chargers went on to win 23-16. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter served as the team's interim head coach. Harbaugh first went to the team's medical tent before walking into the locker room with trainers. With Harbaugh out, Chargers safety Elijah Molden secured an interception, and kicker Cameron Dicker made a field goal on the team's first offensive drive to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead.

76ers to hold Joel Embiid (knee) out for rest of preseason

The Philadelphia 76ers announced Sunday that superstar center Joel Embiid will sit out for the remainder of the preseason due to left knee injury management. Embiid wasn't with the team on the start of its three-game preseason road trip to Iowa Friday and Boston on Saturday, instead meeting with doctors Thursday to check on the status of his left knee. That meeting went well, with sources saying that the goal is to put Embiid in the best possible position to make it through the season, and to have his knee as close to 100% as possible. Last season, Embiid only played in one preseason game, and the expectation this year was that he would be a limited participant in the exhibition slate -- if he wound up doing so at all. Now, the first time he will wear a 76ers uniform this season won't be until at least the season opener on Oct. 23 against the Milwaukee Bucks in Philadelphia. Embiid, who played in 39 games last year after a knee injury in late January...

Jaguars on 'slippery slope' after safety sees 'lot of quit' vs. Bears

After another embarrassing loss filled with the same chronic issues that have affected the Jacksonville Jaguars all season, coach Doug Pederson believes a culture change is needed. If it doesn't happen, he said, a season that is almost already lost could spiral out of control. "We play a 17-game schedule, so we've got a few more games left," Pederson said on the Jaguars' postgame show after their 35-16 loss to the Chicago Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. "Nobody's going to feel sorry for us. We've got to change. I say we, it's all of us -- coaches, players, everybody. We've got to change right now that culture. "Otherwise, it just gets out of control. We're on a slippery slope, or right on the cusp of that slope. At some point we've got to [say] enough is enough, and you've got to have enough pride and figure out a way." It may be even closer to the edge than Pederson realizes, because safety Andre Cisco told Jacksonville television...

Yankees name Carlos Rodón to start Game 1 of ALCS vs. Guardians

NEW YORK -- Left-hander  Carlos Rodón will start the American League Championship Series opener for the New York Yankees against the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night. Rodón rebounded to a 16-9 record with a 3.96 ERA over 175 innings in 32 starts in his second season with the Yankees after signing a six-year, $162 million contract. He went 3-8 with a career-worst 6.85 ERA over 14 outings in a 2023 season that didn't start for him until July 7 because of a strained left forearm and back stiffness. Rodón, 31, took the loss in Game 2 of the AL Division Series against the  Kansas City Royals on Monday. He pitched shutout ball until giving up a leadoff homer to Salvador Perez that sparked a four-run fourth inning. Tommy Pham, Garrett Hampson and Maikel Garcia added RBI singles in a 4-2 win that evened the best-of-five series. Rodón's wife, Ashley, said she received online harassment following his defeat. "It's not the...

Browns' leading rusher Jerome Ford injures hamstring vs. Eagles

PHILADELPHIA -- Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Ford was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles because of a hamstring injury. Ford suffered the injury on the Browns' second possession of the game. He spent time in the medical tent before heading to the locker room. The Browns originally said Ford was questionable to return before ruling him out for the remainder of the game. Ford entered Sunday's game as Cleveland's leading rusher, totaling 250 yards on 48 carries. He had two carries for 14 yards before suffering his injury. Ford's injury comes as the Browns are expected to get four-time Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb back from injury for Week 7. Chubb is expected to make his season debut against the Cincinnati Bengals in Cleveland next Sunday, a source told ESPN, completing his return from a severe left knee injury that required two surgeries last year. Chubb suffered the season-ending knee injury on "Monday...

Cardinals rookie WR Marvin Harrison Jr. suffers concussion

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. was ruled out of Sunday's 34-13 loss to the  Green Bay Packers with a concussion. The fourth overall pick went down with 6:28 left in the second quarter when his head collided with the thigh of Packers linebacker Isaiah McDuffie after a pass to Harrison fell incomplete. Harrison was helped off the field by Cardinals trainers and, after getting evaluated in the blue injury tent on the sideline, left the field and was escorted to the locker room by a team of Arizona trainers and doctors. He was ruled out shortly after the second half began. Harrison did not have a catch on two targets Sunday.

Jeff McNeil on Mets' NLCS roster; Dodgers without Vesia, Rojas

LOS ANGELES -- Jeff McNeil, who fractured his right wrist on a hit by pitch a little more than five weeks ago, is back. The New York Mets added McNeil to the roster for their National League Championship Series matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers before Sunday's Game 1, opting to also keep Luisangel Acuña as a backup infielder. McNeil is coming off playing back-to-back games in the Arizona Fall League, one at second base and the other in right field. With Jose Iglesias locked in as the regular second baseman, McNeil might get starts at one of the outfield corners or be used as a left-handed bat off the bench. McNeil's bat could be even more valuable given the Dodgers will be without a key left-handed reliever in Alex Vesia, who suffered an intercostal injury in Game 5 of the team's NL Division Series. The Dodgers replaced Vesia with right-hander Brent Honeywell, who will probably be used to provide length out of the...
